Carvalho Araújo - Non-Conformist Architecture
In this episode, we delve into the irreverent world of architect José Manuel Carvalho Araújo, one of the most striking figures in contemporary Portuguese architecture and design. After switching from civil engineering to architecture, drawn in by the atmosphere of the Porto School of Fine Arts, he embarked on a journey spanning more than three decades, characterised by innovation and a desire to challenge conventions.
We might call him architecture’s ‘good rebel’. Founder of the Carvalho Araújo studio in Braga in 1996, he has developed a unique architectural language, with projects that transcend borders and span several countries across Europe, Africa and the United States. An advocate of architecture that goes far beyond mere construction, he believes in creating spaces capable of evoking emotions and providing unique experiences.

Masslab: the 'material' that connects people and the planet
In the first episode of the second series of Architecting the Future, we explore the creative universe of Masslab. Architects Diogo de Sousa Rocha and Duarte Ramalho Fontes will share their ‘Planet-People Approach’ philosophy, which is a bold vision that puts harmony between communities and nature at the heart of urban development.
Having established itself in Porto over the past decade, MASSLAB has now conquered the world, particularly the Scandinavian markets, with a multidisciplinary team of 50 talented individuals. In this conversation, we explore how diversity of perspective and commitment to sustainability are shaping tomorrow's cities.
MASSLAB's multidisciplinary team comprises over 50 people of various nationalities who are key to enriching the diversity of perspectives. In 2025, the studio was nominated for two Construir Awards: “Studio of the Year” and “Best Renovation Project” for the Porto Arts Club. This project was presented here by architect Diogo de Sousa Rocha. MASSLAB also won the Golden Trezzini Award in the “Best Project of Residential or Mixed-Use Estate” category.

Even before becoming an architect, Joana Peres was designing worlds. It was on the beach that Joana's foundations were laid, where she would stretch out her finger to draw the plans for the houses she imagined, in the sand and to scale.
It was literature that provided her with the characters that have accompanied her throughout her 20-year career at Saraiva + Associados, where she is now a Senior Partner: characters with soul, voice and human experience.
Joana advocates architecture that cares, welcomes and humanises. However, it is her concept of comfort that truly encapsulates her creative philosophy.
